Those Legendary Shack Shakers

We loved this band, and they loved us, for they said they would play all night. They did three terrific sets and left us begging for more, because the house was closing. This band will be national, so see them as soon as you can, while you can afford them. We hope to see them at Austin City Limits soon!! When they have a date set, I’ll buy my plane ticket.

Helsinki, New York, LA, Tokyo — all of you have not yet hosted Those Legendary Shack Shakers. You don’t know what you are missing! They belong in the Rodeo Bar in NYC! Hope they play there soon.

Have you caught them in Memphis? In New Orleans at the Dixie Tavern, MidCity Lanes or The Mermaid Lounge?

Their debut CD is self-titled but the guys had sold out of it in Detroit, so we couldn’t buy any the night they came to Fort Wayne. (I ordered it from Hepcat Records.) Their tour continues into Pittsburg, then Ohio (with Paul Burleson) and back toward home in Nashville. Do not miss this band, no matter what you have to do to get to it!

All the boyz except Gabe Kudela.

Gabe Kudela on doghouse bass. No, he isn’t really bleeding. He uses red tape on his fingers.

"Low Down" Nathan Brown, on guitar, engaged to be married soon, jamming with "Shady" J.D. Wilkes, born to play harmonica, to sing, to cavort, to entertain. I switched some captions around here, as total fan Joyce Riney said she saw them in Atlanta Georgia, and she told me I had mixed up the photos for Nathan and Brian. Alas, my apologies.

Chris "Wing Nut" Detloff on drums. I think they said he’s married, kittens. Watch him and dream.

Brian "Brody Knob" Berryman guitar and vocals. Kinda shy in person, totally on on-stage.

Gabe’s tat by Demion in New Orleans, done in one four-hour sitting! It’s sharper than this photo.

J.D.’s Tasteless Chill Tonic liner notes

Songs on this album are:

  1. Big Apple Cafe, a little number about our Alma Mater’s favorite watering hole….located just south of the KY/TN wet/dry borderline in an area of the country affectionately known as Tuckasee. (This is an original song.)
  2. Deviled Honey sums up our band’s official slant on the age-old "paradise lost" debate. (original)
  3. You’re Gonna Need Me is a quasi original tune that sums up a lot of what I soaked in while listening to my Dad’s old records as a nerdy adolescent blues geek. (quasi-original)
  4. I Ain’t Home. Here’s a kind of swinging song about dealing with the devil and then scurrying for help when it all comes tumbling down. You’ll notice the devil really comes out looking bad in this number. (original)
  5. 21 Days In Jail. The late great Magic Sam ranks as one of our favorite songwriters with a hauntingly unforgettable melody lines. "Magic" deserves to not only be remembered as the king of the "West Side Sound", but as the king of the entire state of Illinois.
  6. Chicken House. Here’s a blues song by a 50’s country picker. Our sound engineer says he knew Dave personally. Mr. Rich, however, knows no-one by the name of "Roscoe."
  7. Chicken Bone Baby Back in ’47 I made a ramp out of plywood and an old tire and jumped my bike into the river for a girl. She just laughed at me. (original)
  8. Walking Thru The Park. Here’s one of the seemingly numberless tunes written by the greatest blues guy ever. We thought it still needed work, however. Sorry, Muddy.
  9. Ridin’ on the L&N;. My grandpa really worked on this rail-line, so we thought this was a logical, pertinent and sentimental choice. Wouldn’t you agree? Song by Burley/Hampton
  10. Grease Fire! This instrumental actually saved our lives once. (original)
  11. Shakerag Holler is dedicated to the "Voice of Shakerag," a country music pirate radio station I heard over shortwave (during my days as a nerdy adolescent radio geek.) (original)

Additional musicians on this recording are Flyin’ Brian Gray (tracks 3. 4. 7. 11) and Crazy Legs Joh Wurth (tracks 7 and 11.)

The bass player on this CD is Hot-Rod Todd Anderson, not Gabe Kudela who played in Fort Wayne. All the others on the recording are pictured above.

The CD was recorded and mixed in July ’96 at Sam Phillips Recording Services, Inc. in Memphis TN.

I could probably figure out how to make some music samples for you to hear, here. Stand by!

You’ll note that Those Legendary Shack Shakers mention The Bottletones in their Thanks page. Those are the southern Illinois hellraisers you get to see at Fountain Square Theatre in Indy sometimes. Great band! To an Index of Our Music Pages
