Now we are open year-round!!!   However, for group tours in the winter, contact the site by phone, letter or email, but remember that the site manager will not be in the office all the time, in the winter,  to answer you immediately.

HOURS Remember, this is the Eastern time zone. , April 1 through December 19, 2009:
Wednesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, last guided tour starting at 4:30. 
Sundays: 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
(Site closed Mondays and Tuesdays  except by appointment.)

LOCATION: 200 East 6th Street, just off State Road 27, Geneva Indiana in Adams County.  Cabin is visible from State Road 27.  Parking lot beside the property.  Downtown Geneva is a two-block walk from the Cabin.  Adams County abuts the Ohio state line in northeast Indiana. Get a guided tour of one of the Limberlost Swamp Wetlands restoration projects.
               9:30AM —coffee, refreshments and the orientation program (at the cabin site) about the Limberlost wetland projects. 10AM to Noon the group drives out to one of the wetland properties for a tour guided by site naturalists, Bill Hubbard and Jamie Faller, and volunteer Carl Yoder who is our resident plant identification expert.  Cost is $3.00 per person.
RUMMAGE SALE 2009, (over) Netted $319.00 for the Friends of the Limberlost.  Dave Cramer, Wanda Besser and Fran Austin helped organize and staff it.  The money goes to the fund to build the new visitors center at the Limberlost.  NEWS: we can now store almost any reasonably valuable rummage sale items for the 2010 rummage sale!!!  (No clothing.)  Just bring it to the cabin when it is open, between now and next May's sale. 
JUNE 19, 20 Fri & Sat Loblolly BioBlitz  -- GET IN ON THE ACTION!  Biology and Botany experts take
a 24 hour flora and fauna inventory at the Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve – public invited to watch what is going on and also hear from the experts about what they are finding.  Volunteers will assist professors from Hanover College and Ball State University as they take inventory of the species found in this area, including flowers, trees, reptiles, amphibians, birds, moths and butterflies.  Volunteers will pass out flyers, help us get ready for this challenging event, and help to keep people safe.  Volunteers will also give directions to the public who come out to the marsh to learn what the experts are finding, and also to enjoy natural science presentations.

DONATIONS AND SPONSORS are very much needed to pay fees for the presenters, to purchase food for the academics and the volunteers, and to purchase supplies required to put on an event of this magnitude.

Monarch Larva Monitoring Program 9 AM to 3 PM
        Register with Natural Resources Education Center by e-mailing nrec@dnr.in.gov —this event attempts to get the public more involved in monitoring Monarch butterfly numbers in the area, and also reporting migration statistics online.


 

JULY 19, Sunday, First summer bluegrass jamboree of the summer. from 2PM to 4PM. The jamborees are open to all amateur musicians who enjoy playing acoustic instruments. Typically musicians play a variety of gospel, folk, and bluegrass songs. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy listening to the music. No admission charge. Donations encouraged.
JULY 25 SOARING WITH BUTTERFLIES

Join us for an exploration of butterflies at the Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve as we discover some of the very same species that Naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter once studied and wrote about in the early 20th century.
Survey the landscape for native wildflowers and learn which species of butterflies are attracted. Then embrace a wild butterfly before releasing it into the wind.
Afterwards stop by the Limberlost State Historic Site to see the butterfly gardens and Gene Stratton-Porter’s over 100 year old original collection of butterflies and moths.

Ø  Explore native populations of butterflies in Indiana.

Ø  Discover what you can do to help the butterfly population

Ø  Follow a Naturalist to get a closer look at butterflies.

Ø  Release a butterfly of your own*.

This event is coordinated with Swiss Days in Berne, Indiana.

FRIENDSHIP DAY!!  If you live in Adams, Jay, Wells, or Mercer Counties
and your work brings you in contact with the general public,

we invite you to attend this special event designed just for you and your family! 
If you work as a food server, store clerk, or public employee you're invited.  Work in a gas station, hotel, museum, gallery, school, church or civic organization?  Come to this free event, because we want to thank you for all you do, and we want to tell you about all we do too! 

You all can play a variety of games, win prizes, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and find out what the Limberlost is all about. Then when the next person asks you  "What's to do around here?"  you'll recommend a visit to the Limberlost.
Please join us on August 2nd.  It's all free, and it should be a lot of fun.

Gene Stratton-Porter Birthday Tea Party
Victorian tea features special food menu and period entertainment. Dress-up and pretend you are back in the early 1900s. Hat contest & door prizes. (Be sure no birds are harmed whilst decorating your hat!) Seating limited to 36 people. Cost $25.00/person. Please make a reservation by phoning 260-368-7428.    The food is unique and delicious.

Ladies wearing hats are automatically entered in the hat contest with prizes awarded for 1. The Best Vintage Hat,    2. Hat With The Best Butterfly Theme, and 3. Judges' Choice.

Entertainment is not confirmed yet but it will compliment the theme of Girl Of The Limberlost, Mrs. Porter's most popular book.  (100 years old this year.)

It's 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, fee $3.00 ages 3-6.     Your child will make a craft and meet wetlands creatures and plants.  You must register before September 30th!  Meets Indiana Academic Standards.  This will be enormous fun!!

FILM FEST!!!!!  Back by popular demand!  We will be showing at least these two films:
A GIRL OF THE LIMBERLOST from 1934 and LADDIE from 1949.  In September we will know the ticket price and possibly have dinner and hotel packages.  This is thrilling news!  If we can arrange for a third film based on a Gene Stratton-Porter book, we would have four hours of film for that evening.  Starts 6:00 PM in the historic Star Theatre in downtown Geneva, Indiana.  There will be a butterfly necklace handcrafted by Monica Berg, GSP's great-granddaughter!

Visit with Santa, enjoy Limber Jim’s Swamp Show, enjoy a musical performance. Children can also make a craft and do the treasure hunt. Holiday refreshments available for everyone. Admission charge: $3.50/person. No reservations needed, but large groups should probably call ahead. Scout groups usually attend, and darling babies!
DECEMBER Usually there is a gift shop sale in December.  I will post the date when I get it.  Great bargains on clothes, books and other fun gifts!

BLUEGRASS JAMBOREES
In 2009, three Jamborees will be offered on the third Sunday of the month during the months of July, August, and September, from 2PM to 4PM. The jamborees are open to all amateur musicians who enjoy playing acoustic instruments. Typically musicians play a variety of gospel, folk, and bluegrass songs. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy listening to the music. No admission charge. Donations encouraged.
ALL YEAR Go Green With Gene tee-shirts for sale, sizes Small through XL, in colors of Natural, Bamboo Green, Light Pink, Yellow Haze and Light Blue. The logo for the shirt is on the front page of this site, and here is a thumbnail of it. (Order through our giftshop or buy at the site.)

Probably many more activities will take place this fall. They just aren't scheduled yet!

surp.jpg (4513 bytes)  FEES: There is a charge, but only for the guided tour at the Limberlost Cabin or for special programs as noted above. 

Fees for the guided tour are $3.50 for adults,  $3.00 for seniors, $2.00 for children unless otherwise noted.
This change was completely necessary.   A portion of the collected money will be used for emergency repairs, a portion will go to the State for publicizing the State Historic Sites, and part will help enhance the visitor's experience. If you have joined Friends of the Limberlost, you won't need to pay the  charge, and you will have a 10% discount in the gift shop.
