CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING:

  1. *Tour at least one of the following sites: Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva, Indiana, or Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in Rome City, Indiana.
  2. Volunteer for at least two hours in one of the following ways:
    1. Help replant native species and remove invasive species at Limberlost Nature Preserves.
    2. Help with weeding and caring for the gardens and grounds at Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site.
    3. With your troop, decide how to take Gene’s ideas about nature and conservation and share them with your community, school, or other Girl Scouts through a poster, play, letter to the editor, or another way.
  3. Shutterbug. Gene would spend hours in the bushes waiting to take the perfect photograph of a bird or a moth. Visit a nearby natural area (or during your visit to the State Historic Sites above) and photograph or draw something from the natural world that you find interesting such as a tree, flowers, or a butterfly.

  4. Write wild. While you are there, spend a few minutes writing about what you see or feel in the natural world. It can be a story, a description, how it makes you feel, a poem, a newspaper article, or some other type of writing.

  5. Read a selection from one of Gene's books or poems. Talk about what she wrote with your troop.
  6. Create a naturalist's journal. Decorate it any way you want. Put your photos, writings, and or other artwork in this journal.
  7. Walk like a naturalist! Make a list of what a good naturalist needs to be aware of when they are in the woods and what types of supplies they should bring with them.
  8. Recycling is good for nature! Since Gene was an artist, can you find a way to make art out of something that is used? For example, use rolled up newspaper strips to make a necklace. Use your creativity!
  9. Make up a game for younger Girl Scouts about nature, the environment, Gene Stratton-Porter. If you like, send a copy of your game to one of the historic sites listed above.
  10. Share what you have learned about Gene Stratton-Porter and nature with other Girl Scouts.
  11. Careers as a naturalist, writer, photographer, or in museums. Many people are good at more than one thing, and often they combine talents in their jobs. Find out about one or more of the following careers at either historic site, or on your own.
  12. (For Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassadors Girl Scouts) Compare the life and work of Gene Stratton-Porter to Juliette Gordon Low. When did they live? How did they get passionate about their work? Why did they try to share their ideas with other people? How did they help people? Create a display, blog, website, or other way to share what you have found.
