CITY EVENS SCORE! DEFEATS COUNTY 52-34

Reported by Bill Weinhardt

In a hard fought basketball contest at the Bluffton High School gymnasium, the City of Bluffton defeated the Wells County team by a score of 52-34. Only city coach Mayor Ted Ellis being ejected from the game with 23.2 seconds remaining and his team leading 50-34 marred the well played game. The ejection occurred when he was called for his second and third technicals as he threw his coat on the playing floor and then tossed a folding chair onto the court. This conduct obviously trying the patience of officials Jim Mettler and Robert Plummer.

It is believed that coach Mayor Ted had completely misunderstood the scoreboard throughout the game and thought his team was behind, when it was actually winning. In marked contrast was the dignified and calm demeanor of losing coach Judge David Hansleman of the Wells County team.

At half time with the city leading by score of 29-17, a half court basket-shooting contest was held. Ernie Smiley won this and he was awarded with the Kobe Bryant rookie card prize. Then followed the 3-point shot contest with a number of participants from the crowd.

Playing for the winning city team were David Irwin, John Oman, Mike Mann, Hank Esmond, Charley Smiley, Eric Kieffer, Barry Crosbie, and Ernie Smiley. Playing for the county were Scott Ailor, Scott Mossburg, Phil Grove, Greg Werich, Mike Lautzenheiser, Kevin Woodward, Blake Poindexter, Monte Fisher, Brooks Mounsey, and Randy Still.

Missing for the county were Dennis Ealing and Barry Story who may have mistakenly gone to the gym in the city building and waited the whole evening for everyone else to show up.

The Brian Cardinal citizen pain award goes to Scott Mossburg who spent much of his time on the floor actually on the floor.

Proceeds from this event are for the benefit of the family of Brant Lyon, a Bluffton man who has ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease).
