David Loehr's 2004 James Dean Fan Appreciation Weekend
Banquet at Ryan's Steak House, Marion, Indiana

This was our first try at using a restaurant for our banquet, and it turned out great.  We just need a slightly larger room.  Highlights of the evening were the awesome food, new and old friendships, the silent auction to raise money for ink to print the fan club magazine, and our guest speakers.

One amazing speaker, Marcus Winslow, Jr., read excerpts from letters Jimmy had written to his father and to his Aunt Ortense and Uncle Marcus Winslow, Sr. who raised Jimmy after his mother died.  We were privileged to hear James speak so well of his father.  The family would like us to be aware of Jim's love for his family, despite some of the books and movies.

These letters will be in a James Dean biography to be published in England soon. The author is George Perry; the publisher is Colin Webb.  Marcus Winslow is cooperating fully on this biography.

We will also be seeing a James Dean documentary.  Brian Jameson of Marfa is funding the film.  Michael Sheridan will make the movie.  When he was 15 years old, Michael Sheridan ran away from home and made his way to Jimmy's house.  (I think this was when Jimmy died.)  Ortense Winslow made Michael call his parents from her house.  Later on, he collected 29 of the 35 or 36 television shows Jimmy appeared in.  The other 6 or 7 probably don't exist.  These television shows are the focus of the documentary.

A second speaker was Johnny Calderon,  head of the Chamber of Commerce in Marfa, Texas.
We are hoping to charter a bus to take us there for the 4th of July celebration in 2005.  That year is the 50th anniversary of Dean's death, and events all over the globe will mark it.  In Marfa, Mr. Calderon and Curtis Schraeder plan on having a 1950s band that will play every other hour, with a DJ filling the alternate hours.  There will be searchlights, stock cars, lookalike contests, food vendors and more.  We will be able to meet people who knew James Dean, including Dave Tucker.

In May 2004, many Fairmount and fan club members were invited to Marfa for the first showing of the DVD of Giant.  It was a fabulous experience for all.   Mr. Calderon is the nephew of Lucy Garcia who met James Dean in Marfa, when she was 15 years old.

A third speaker was Joe Schulte from Detroit.  He brought the sad news that his brother Ed Schulte passed on July 7, 2004.
Joe is sending me more information so I can share it here with you.

These dozen prizes went to the highest bidders at our Silent Auction, to raise money for ink to print the Dean Zine, the James Dean Remembered fan club magazine in full color.  Each issue would cost $11,000.00 if printed at a printer.  With the fine color printer donated by Mr. Marcus Winslow, Jr., Pam Crawford can print each issue for $299.00 for one vat of color ink and  $199  for a vat of black ink.  Anyone who can chip in for the ink should send a check to
